Setup and Rank reference.

General setup help for free indicators, plus detailed settings for TanHef Ranks and Ranks Screener.

Free indicators · Setup

Add a free indicator.

No TanHef subscription or manual access request is needed.

  1. Choose your tool.Open the free indicators collection and follow its Open on TradingView link.
  2. Add it to your chart.Sign in to TradingView, read the script's description, then select Use on chart on its publication page.
  3. Follow that tool's instructions.Start with its defaults and read its description before changing settings. Each free tool works differently; the Rank reference below applies only to Ranks and Screener.

TradingView's chart setup instructions . TradingView's own plan and data limits still apply.

01 · Ranks & Screener setup

Start with Ranks or Screener.

Both indicators require manual access from TanHef. Request a 30-day trial or view subscription options. The trial begins when access is granted.

  1. Add the script after access is granted.Sign in to the TradingView account you requested access for. Open Indicators, choose Invite-only scripts, and select TanHef Ranks or TanHef Ranks Screener.
  2. Choose how to start. For Ranks, use the defaults and follow the chart lesson. For Screener, set up price-ratio comparisons or review three stocks on their own.
  3. Read the current Rank.Negative suggests oversold conditions; positive suggests overbought conditions. Zero is neutral. A Rank shows a condition, not a confirmed reversal.
  4. Check the history behind it.When ready, review occurrence counts and Extreme triangles, then Bar Coverage to see how much history was evaluated.
  5. Set alerts when you are ready.Adding the indicator does not create an alert. Follow the alert setup instructions for your indicator.

Screener · Comparison setup

Compare SPY with three stocks.

After adding Screener, open a 4-hour chart. This example keeps SPY fixed as the common comparison symbol.

  1. Choose your list.In Screener settings, set Ticker Source to 🔸Text. Paste these entries into List up to 40 tickers (PREFIX:TICKER):
    NASDAQ:AAPL
    NASDAQ:MSFT
    NASDAQ:NVDA
  2. Choose the common symbol.Set Auto Pair to Input/List and select AMEX:SPY in the adjacent Pair Input field. Screener automatically creates SPY/AAPL, SPY/MSFT, and SPY/NVDA and calculates each ratio's Rank.
  3. Read the comparisons.SPY/NVDA means SPY's price divided by Nvidia's price. Its Rank describes that ratio, not Nvidia's own price. To inspect it with Ranks, open AMEX:SPY/NASDAQ:NVDA manually using the same timeframe and settings.

Use Chart/List instead if you want the common symbol to follow your chart. Use List(none) to view each stock on its own.

Recreate existing alerts after changing your list or pairing settings. See the comparison example or read the full settings reference.

Screener · Lists

Start with a preset or a short list.

Built-in presets

In Screener settings, choose a ready-made group under Ticker Source. No pasting is needed.

  • US Sector Breadth (11): ETFs for the 11 S&P 500 sectors.
  • Global Equity Benchmarks (5): US large-, mid-, and small-cap ETFs, plus developed and emerging markets.
  • Macro Benchmarks (5): ETFs for stocks, Treasury bonds, corporate bonds, gold, and commodities.
  • Crypto Anchors (2): Bitcoin and Ethereum in USD.

A preset supplies the list, not the comparison mode. Use List(none) for individual readings, or choose a common symbol for price-ratio comparisons.

Custom starter lists

Select and copy the tickers below. Set Ticker Source to 🔸Text and paste them into List up to 40 tickers (PREFIX:TICKER). You can add or remove symbols.

Three stocks: Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia
NASDAQ:AAPL
NASDAQ:MSFT
NASDAQ:NVDA
Seven companies used in the walkthrough
NASDAQ:AAPL
NASDAQ:MSFT
NASDAQ:NVDA
NASDAQ:AMZN
NASDAQ:GOOGL
NASDAQ:META
NASDAQ:TSLA

Setup examples, not investment recommendations. Symbols reviewed . Check the symbols and feeds in TradingView before using a list. Recreate alerts after changing the list or pairing settings.

Setup help

If something is missing.

Where do I find a free indicator?

Use its direct link in the free indicators collection, then select Use on chart. Free tools do not appear in Invite-only scripts.

I cannot find Ranks or Screener in TradingView.

Access is granted manually, not immediately when you submit a request or subscribe. Check that you are signed in with the TradingView username you supplied. After access is confirmed, refresh TradingView and check Indicators → Invite-only scripts. That category appears only after an author grants access to an invite-only script. If it is still missing, contact TanHef with your username and request date.

Why is there no Rank bar on some candles?

With the default display, a blank Rank position means 0 (neutral). Not every candle has an overbought or oversold reading. If the entire pane is missing, check that TanHef Ranks is added and visible on the chart. If TradingView shows an error, include its text when you ask for help.

Why am I not receiving an alert?

First check that you created an alert in TradingView and that it is active. Confirm its condition, frequency, and notification options. It only triggers when the chosen condition occurs. If you changed the script or its settings, recreate the alert because existing alerts keep their original script and settings.

02 · Ranks

What the values mean

Ranks organize configured multi-horizon price and momentum conditions into a numeric scale. A Rank identifies the condition present in the calculation; it does not predict the next move.

NegativeOversold-side Rank
ZeroNeutral Rank reading
PositiveOverbought-side Rank

Readings farther from zero are generally more selective and occur less often. Selectivity is not a measure of accuracy or expected return.

Rank sizes and colours

These are the default size ranges and colours.

GroupOversold (−)Overbought (+)
SmallShort-term context−1 to −3Yellow-green+1 to +3Magenta
MediumMedium-term context−4 to −5Green+4 to +5Red
LargeLonger-term context−6 or lowerBright green+6 or higherOrange

Time scale depends on your chart timeframe and settings. Rank size does not confirm a reversal.

As Rank strength increases, the calculation includes longer periods of price history alongside shorter ones. You can change the Medium and Large cutoffs and the colours in Visual Styling.

Zero uses the neutral colour. Groups can appear in any order and repeat. A blank Rank position means 0 (neutral).

The website's synthetic reversal examples are selected illustrations, not a measure of how often reversals occur or how reliable a Rank is.

03 · Occurrences & extremes

Historical context depends on loaded data

Rank Occurrences count how often readings appeared in the history available to the calculation, not how often a trade won. Loaded-history Extremes identify the strongest oversold- and overbought-side Ranks found so far within that available history.

Keep in mind

Your TradingView plan, available data, symbol feed, session, timeframe, and revised source data can affect how much history loads and can change older occurrence counts or extreme comparisons.

04 · Bar Coverage

Check how much history was evaluated

Bar Coverage shows how many bars were evaluated from each source and how many Chart-bar results they produced. Limited coverage gives occurrences and Extremes less history to compare. Read Bar Coverage with the Rank rather than as a separate signal.

05 · Multi-timeframe

Compare more than one timeframe

The Chart Rank always uses the chart timeframe. Multi-timeframe (MTF) can add up to two selected non-chart timeframes and show them separately or combine them. Different timeframes can show different Rank conditions.

06 · Alerts

Set up alerts.

Adding an indicator does not create an alert. These optional examples watch for readings of +4 or higher or −4 or lower when the chart bar closes.

TanHef Ranks

  1. Choose when to alert. In Ranks settings, open Rank Event Settings (Alerts & Flags). Set Alert Frequency to Bar Close and Event Filter (Alert/Flag) to All.
  2. Choose the readings.Set Min Rank to 4 in the chart overbought (🔴) and oversold (🟢) rows. Set both MTF rows to blank for this chart-only example.
  3. Create the TradingView alert.Open Create Alert. In Condition, select TanHef Ranks, then Any alert() function call. Choose your notification options and select Create.

Min Rank and Event Filter also affect plotted flags. This example replaces the default Extreme thresholds; keep Extreme if you want alerts and flags to use the loaded-history Extremes instead.

TanHef Ranks Screener

  1. Choose when to alert. In Screener settings, open Rank Event Settings (Alerts & Flags). Set Alert Frequency to Bar Close and Event Filter (Alert/Flag) to All.
  2. Watch each list entry.Set Min Rank to 4 in both Single Tickers rows. Set both Total Rank rows to blank. In comparison mode, Single Tickers watches each price ratio's Rank, not each stock's own Rank.
  3. Create the TradingView alert.Open Create Alert. In Condition, select TanHef Ranks Screener, then Any alert() function call. Choose your notification options and select Create.

To watch Total Rank instead, set both Single Tickers rows to blank and choose Min Rank in the Total Rank rows. Those thresholds also affect Total Rank flags.

What to expect

All can alert on consecutive qualifying bars, not just when a threshold is first crossed. An alert does not necessarily fire immediately, and it does not confirm a reversal.

After changing your setup

Existing alerts keep the script, chart context, and settings saved when you created them. Recreate alerts after changing the script, chart symbol, timeframe, list, or settings.

TradingView's alert setup instructions . For Any alert() function call, the indicator's Alert Frequency setting controls timing.

07 · Screener

Review individual entries or comparisons

Review each configured entry on its own in List mode, or compare the list with your current chart or a selected ticker. For example, SPX/NVDA means the S&P 500 index price divided by Nvidia's share price. Its Rank describes that ratio, not either symbol on its own. Positive suggests the ratio is stretched upward; negative suggests it is stretched downward. Total Rank summarizes the included readings.

Input methods

Use Text to paste a comma- or line-separated list, Single to add tickers individually, or combine both methods. Exchange prefixes help avoid ticker mismatches.

Pair configuration

  • Chart/List: compare the current chart ticker with every item in the list. The common side follows when you change charts.
  • List/Chart: compare every list item with the current chart ticker.
  • Input/List: compare a selected input ticker with every item in the list.
  • List/Input: compare every list item with a selected input ticker.
  • List: use each configured entry as provided. No shared comparison ticker is needed.

Choosing between screeners

TradingView Pine Screener is suited to broad discovery, filtering, and sorting across compatible individual symbols in watchlists or indices. TanHef Ranks Screener is designed for configured relative comparisons, formula lists, Total Rank, loaded-history context, and the associated on-chart alert workflow.

Request limit

The Screener can request up to 40 tickers or ticker formulas. A single ticker such as NASDAQ:AAPL and a pair formula such as NASDAQ:AAPL/AMEX:SPY each count as one of the 40.

Total Rank

Total Rank is calculated in three steps: Filter, then Cap, then Center. Filter removes selected signed Rank values. Cap limits extreme values that remain without removing them. Center combines the remaining adjusted values into one Total Rank. The default is No Filter, No Cap, and Mean (a simple average of the included readings). These settings affect Total Rank, not the Rank displayed for each ticker or comparison.

Total Rank Occurrences

Total Rank Occurrences groups historical Total Rank results into signed whole-number ranges toward zero. For example, the +1 range includes values from +1 up to, but not including, +2. The directional 0.x ranges contain nonzero values between zero and one; exact zero is counted separately. These are Total Rank range counts, not separate occurrence counts for each ticker or comparison.

Loaded history, coverage, and Extremes

Bar Coverage describes how much history contributed to the Screener results. Each requested comparison and Total Rank can track its own loaded-history Extreme. The chart context, TradingView plan, available data, and reload behavior can change the loaded range, occurrence counts, and Extremes.

Sorting and alert order

Sorting changes the visual display only. Alert messages preserve the original input order.

08 · FAQ

Questions users actually ask

These answers cover visible behavior and settings without disclosing the protected Rank calculation.

Do Ranks tell me when to buy or sell?

No. Ranks identify configured overbought- or oversold-side conditions. They do not confirm a reversal or provide an automatic entry. Use the Rank with broader context, independent analysis, and your own risk controls.

Why did an Extreme triangle appear at Rank -4?

By default, a triangle can appear when a Rank reaches its direction’s loaded-history Extreme. This is the Rank farthest from 0 found so far in the Chart history TradingView loaded. A -4 can qualify when no stronger oversold-side Rank appeared earlier in that loaded history. Ties may flag again.

Does Rank -4 mean four length settings are aligned?

No. The Rank is a strength reading, not a literal count of aligned settings. Read a -4 as an oversold-side condition that is less strong than -6 or -8. The protected calculation is not represented by a simple length count.

Does a Rank farther from zero mean a better outcome?

No. Farther from 0 means a stronger and generally more selective condition. It does not establish accuracy, probability, expected return, or the direction of the next price move.

Can a Rank jump from 0 to −3?

Yes. A quick move can cross several Rank levels at once, so it doesn’t have to change one number at a time.

What happens when price pulls back during an open bar?

Once an intrabar extreme establishes a same-side Rank, a pullback does not reduce that Rank within the bar. Only movement to a farther same-side price extreme can increase it. Live Ranks can still update while the Chart bar is open.

What is the difference between Stronger and Extreme?

Stronger compares the current same-side Rank with the prior bar. Extreme compares it with the strongest same-side Rank found in loaded Chart history. A continuing sequence such as -4, -5, and -6 can therefore qualify on several bars even when Stronger is selected.

Why can two users see different historical triangles?

Loaded history is often the reason. TradingView plan limits, available candles, symbol feed, timeframe, session, settings, and revised data can change the comparison window. Recent results are more likely to align when those inputs match.

What does Bar Coverage measure?

Bar Coverage shows how many bars were evaluated from each source and how many Chart-bar results they produced. It is not limited to the bars visible on screen and does not claim that every bar available from TradingView was used. Month and session labels describe the data only when they are known.

Is the Chart Rank automatically multi-timeframe?

No. The Chart Rank always uses the Chart timeframe. MTF adds up to two selected non-chart timeframe sources. Separate shows MTF #1 on its own, while the combined modes summarize the selected Chart and/or MTF sources according to the chosen MTF Type.

How many tickers can the Screener request?

Up to 40. Each requested ticker or ticker formula counts as one. For example, NASDAQ:AAPL counts as one, and NASDAQ:AAPL/AMEX:SPY also counts as one.

How do I cancel a current website subscription?

Use the Stripe customer portal. Stripe emails sign-in instructions to the email associated with your subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Cancelling your TradingView account does not cancel Stripe billing.

Why can lower-timeframe MTF coverage differ from opening that timeframe directly?

Lower-timeframe mode evaluates intrabars inside each Chart bar and selects the negative and positive LTF Ranks farthest from 0 for that Chart bar. It does not display every intrabar as a separate Chart bar, and available coverage depends on the data and request limits.

Why did an existing alert keep its old behavior?

TradingView alerts retain the script version and settings captured when they were created. Recreate an alert after updating the script or changing its configuration.
